Instructions to check for eSIM compatibility and carrier restrictions
Device compatibility can differ between countries. For instance, in mainland China, Macau, and Hong Kong, iPhones XS, XS Max, and XR are sold with dual physical SIM slots, making them incompatible with eSIM technology.
Consequently, determining eSIM compatibility can rely on more than just the provided list. To ensure accuracy, you may need to follow specific guidelines to assess compatibility and carrier limitations for your device. Please follow the steps below to determine if your device supports eSIM technology.
For iOS
Check for a carrier-unlocked phone: Go to Settings > General > About > In Carrier lock. If you see “No SIM restrictions,” your phone will be carrier-unlocked.
Check for eSIM-compatible: Go to Settings > Cellular > If you see “Add eSIM or Add Cellular Plan/ Mobile Plan) so your phone is eSIM-compatible.
For Samsung
Check for carrier-unlocked phone: Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks/ Cellular Networks > Network Operators > When you click on that, if you see the list of many operators, your phone is unlocked.
Check for eSIM-compatible devices: Settings > Connections > SIM card manager > If you see “Add eSIM” or “ Add Cellular Plan/ Mobile Plan”, your phone is eSIM-compatible.
For Google Pixel:
- To enable developer options, go to Settings > Select About Phone > Tap on Build Number until you see a message that you are already a developer.
- Then go back to Settings > Select System > Select Developer Options > You will see OEM Unlocking and don't turn it on. You need to check if you're able to toggle this on. If you can, that means your phone is unlocked to a carrier. If not, that means you have a locked device.
Check for an eSIM-compatible phone: Go to Settings > Select Network & Internet > Select SIMs > If you see “Add eSIM” or “ Add Cellular Plan/ Mobile Plan,” your phone is eSIM-compatible.
